DOUBLE DISC OPENER (PRE 2025 MODEL) – GENERIC

This is a generic code to give you all of the information that you need about the Manutec Double Disc system.  if you press the Enquire Now icon one of our staff will contact you to discuss your needs.  You can also search through all of the different options on-line if you like.

First a little bit of history.  Manutec is the 4th manufacturer of these units (that we are aware of).  Originally they were made in the USA and imported into Australia.  They were mostly used in NSW and were very popular for both pasture and cotton.  The original importer made the decision to make the units in Australia and build complete seeders with seed bins and manual seed drives.  All of this was done up in Central NSW.  A third manufacturer took over and the manufacturing was shifted to AGPRO in Victoria, there is an image of the original green AGPRO unit in the gallery..  The most commonly used brands for these Seeders was the Stubble King.  Manutec has supplied parts to both of the original Australian manufacturers and so when the third manufacturer made the decision to retire from making farm equipment they asked Manutec to continue providing spare parts to their customers.  So the good news is that if you have one of the older machines Manutec has spares for most of the Double Disc units.  We have also made a copy of the original square drive seed distributors (see picture in gallery) and the internal nylon components.  Since taking over the manufacture Manutec has made a number of subtle changes to further improve performance and reliability.  Manutec has also made a range of components for other manufacturers of Double Disc units over the years, including Sew-Ezy, Homan, Duncan and John Shearer, so some legacy spare parts are available for those machines.  We have helped many Sew-Ezy customers to completely refurbish their machines.

Manutec Double Disc Openers are located on a parallelogram system that provides constant down pressure and they are independent of the weight of your seed drill. What this means is that no matter what the weight of the seed and fertilizer within the drill, the sowing depth remains constant, and in most applications there is no need for a ground opening device to run before the double disc opener.

The parallelograms operate independently of one each other, so if one row hits an obstruction, only that particular unit will lift out of the ground, while all other units remain in the ground. The Manutec Disc Openers will cut through wheat stubble as high as 8 tonne/Ha. They can also cope with small branches and twigs. Another advantage is that seeding can be conducted at speeds of between 10-16 km/hr and they require less horsepower to operate.

The leading scalloped disc acts like a drive mechanism making it easy for the Double Disc unit to move through trash.  The plain disc then opens up a slot for the seed and or fertiliser.  A double plain disc set up can also be used, however the standard set up with the leading scalloped disc is strongly recommended.  Set in between the two discs are two seed/fertiliser tubes, one forward and one rear.  The dual tube set up allows versatility for seed and/or fertiliser placement.  A flexible nylon seed firmer is positioned behind the rear seed tube, which helps to reduce seed bounce and also gently presses the seed into the soil prior to the press wheel passing over.

The spacing of each unit can be as small as 6 inches, an adjustable spring setting allows down force be adjusted, depending on ground conditions.

Press wheels trail behind the disc opener controlling the sowing depth, pressing the seed and covering the seed and fertiliser with soil, eliminating the need for harrows. A range of press wheel shapes and sizes are available to suit varying conditions.  The press wheels ensure that very shallow disc cut settings can be used if required.  Adjusting cutting depth with the press wheel is done using a small handle in front of the press wheel and then using a lock nut to lock in the depth.

A range of different press wheel options are available depending on soil conditions and crops being planted. All bearings used are fully sealed so no greasing of wheels or discs is required.

An internal mud scraper is fitted between the discs to prevent the build up of dirt between the discs.  Side scrapers for the discs are also available.

As with all Manutec products a full range of spare parts is available in our Adelaide warehouse and most spare parts orders leave either same day or next day.  If it is an urgent breakdown we will give your order priority to get the parts to you as quickly as possible.

The Double Disc units can be set up on either 3″ or 4″ square bar.  We recommend 4″ where possible.  The units can be set up on a single bar all in one row or across multiple bars if lower row spacings are required.

A triple disc set up is also available with a leading coulter for strip-til set ups.

A new model is being released in 2025 which provides a greater range of fitting options allowing the Double Disc units to be fitted to a larger range of existing farm equipment and seeder bars.  This includes a staggered mounting option.

So why insist on Manutec products ?

  1. 100% Australian Owned for nearly 30 years and we intend to be here to support our customers for the next 30 years.  We first started working with your grandfather and then his sons and daughters and now his grandchildren
  2. Large range of options to suit all farming, conditions we do not believe in a one fit for all conditions.
  3. Our aftermarket products are not copies, they are a different product that is designed to solve problems on the original manufacturer’s machinery.  We fix other brands issues.
  4. We listen to our customers. The majority of our products are a result of listening to our customers.  We understand that Australia is not another state of the USA.
  5. Once you purchase a Manutec product we set you up as an account customer and maintain a full purchase history with you so as to make purchasing the correct spares a quick and easy process.
  6. We back up our products and will always answer your phone calls.  We run a tiered sales and support system to ensure that any enquiries are handled by the most appropriate person to quickly provide the parts that you need or assist you to solve any operational or maintenance issues.
  7. All of our products are repairable, and we are working hard to implement the Zero Maintenance philosophy across the complete range of our products.  Where possible we source the best quality components from the best quality manufacturers.
  8. We carry a full range of spare parts for every product and most spare parts leave same day or next day.  In  most cases we have parts (some upgraded to the latest spec) for products that are 30 years old and if we don’t we will have a work around solution. Most customers are blown away when they visit us and see how many parts and how much stock we hold.
  9. Our products are used by Australia’s leading manufacturers of farm equipment, especially those that care about their customers, more than they care about cutting costs.
  10. On-site in Adelaide we have Rapid Prototyping (3D CAD and Printing) and CNC Machining Centres so we can quickly design and build new parts.
  11. We field test all new design prototypes for as long as it takes to get the product farm ready for Australian conditions.

So what should you be wary of ?

  1. When you are buying equipment from overseas, consider how that machine is going to be supported when you have breakdowns and the time delay in getting parts and the cost of those parts.
  2. The above also applies to some “fly by night” local companies.  Are they going to be able to deliver in the first place and will they be around when you need parts ?  Will they answer your phone when you need them ?
  3. Beware of manufacturers both local and overseas that have a one fit suits all approach to designing farm equipment.  Australian farms are very different from East to West and from North to South and very different to North American and European farms.
  4. Beware of Australian manufacturers that use componentry from overseas that could be sourced in Australia.  There is a good chance those components will not be available when you need them and that the cost will be high.
